A classic homemade Salisbury steak recipe with tender beef patties simmered in rich onion gravy. Easy, flavorful, and perfect for busy weeknights.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef (85/15)
  • 1/3 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 1 tbsp olive oil or butter (for frying)

For the Gravy:

  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 tbsp butter (optional, for richness)

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, chopped onion, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined.
  2. Shape into 4–6 oval patties and press a shallow indent in the center of each. Chill for 15–20 minutes.
  3. Heat oil or butter in a skillet over medium-high heat. Sear patties for 3–4 minutes per side until browned. Remove and set aside.
  4. In the same skillet, add sliced onions and sauté for 5–7 minutes.
  5. Sprinkle in flour, stir for 1–2 minutes, then gradually add beef broth while stirring to avoid lumps. Add Worcestershire, season to taste.
  6. Simmer until thickened, about 3–5 minutes.
  7. Return patties to the skillet, cover with gravy, and simmer on low heat for 10–15 minutes until cooked through.
  8. Serve hot over mashed potatoes, noodles, or rice.

Notes

For extra flavor, add sautéed mushrooms to the gravy or a splash of cream. Use almond flour instead of breadcrumbs for a keto version.
