Description
A classic homemade Salisbury steak recipe with tender beef patties simmered in rich onion gravy. Easy, flavorful, and perfect for busy weeknights.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb ground beef (85/15)
- 1/3 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 large egg
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
- 1 tbsp olive oil or butter (for frying)
For the Gravy:
- 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 1 tbsp butter (optional, for richness)
Instructions
- In a mixing bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, chopped onion, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined.
- Shape into 4–6 oval patties and press a shallow indent in the center of each. Chill for 15–20 minutes.
- Heat oil or butter in a skillet over medium-high heat. Sear patties for 3–4 minutes per side until browned. Remove and set aside.
- In the same skillet, add sliced onions and sauté for 5–7 minutes.
- Sprinkle in flour, stir for 1–2 minutes, then gradually add beef broth while stirring to avoid lumps. Add Worcestershire, season to taste.
- Simmer until thickened, about 3–5 minutes.
- Return patties to the skillet, cover with gravy, and simmer on low heat for 10–15 minutes until cooked through.
- Serve hot over mashed potatoes, noodles, or rice.
Notes
For extra flavor, add sautéed mushrooms to the gravy or a splash of cream. Use almond flour instead of breadcrumbs for a keto version.
