Description

This homemade Salisbury steak recipe features juicy beef patties simmered in rich onion gravy. A quick and hearty family-friendly dinner ready in under 45 minutes, it’s pure comfort food made from scratch with simple ingredients.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20)
  • 1 egg
  • 1/3 cup breadcrumbs (or oats for gluten-free)
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp ketchup (optional, for extra flavor)
  • 1 tbsp oil (for searing)

Gravy Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 cups beef broth
  • 1/2 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp ketchup
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch (mixed with 2 tbsp cold water)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine ground beef, egg, breadcrumbs, chopped onion, garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined.
  2. Shape the mixture into 4–6 oval patties.
  3. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Sear the patties for 3–4 minutes per side until browned. Remove and set aside.
  4. In the same skillet, sauté the sliced onion until soft and caramelized, about 5 minutes.
  5. Add beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, and bring to a simmer.
  6. Stir in cornstarch slurry and let the gravy thicken.
  7. Return patties to the skillet. Cover and simmer on low for 15–20 minutes until fully cooked and tender.
  8. Serve hot with mashed potatoes or your favorite sides.

Notes

For added richness, stir in 1 tablespoon of butter to the gravy before serving. To make it low-carb, substitute breadcrumbs with crushed pork rinds or almond flour. For a gluten-free option, use gluten-free oats or certified GF breadcrumbs and ensure the Worcestershire sauce is gluten-free.
